The Colors of Fall, The Colors of Money
We all look forward to the changing colors of the fall foliage.  This month we can also enjoy the changing colors of United States currency.  Redesigned $20 bills are scheduled to start appearing in circulation mid-October that, in addition to the traditional green and black, include peach, yellow and blue features on them.  This is the first time in 95 years that U.S. currency includes colors other than green and black.

Travelers should keep in mind that it takes time for new U.S. bills to become commonplace in other countries, especially in more remote regions.  We can recall several stories of international travelers trying to pay for taxis or make purchases after the last changes were made to U.S. currency.  The taxi drivers and shopkeepers had not yet been exposed to the new bills and though they normally accepted payment in U.S. currency, they would not accept the new bills, suspecting that they might be counterfeit.

So, if you are traveling overseas in the near future and plan on using U.S. currency, don’t be stuck with only the new $20 bills that you received from the ATM at the airport.  Check to see that you have some of the older style bills as well.

Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe provided high adventure for Rosemary Dineen as she took her 3 month solo journey through East Africa.  She made no formal plans for after her 13-day tented safari.  Her love of high adventure and the unknown was re-ignited as she traveled from place to place on dhows, barges, trains, matatus, buses, plans and shared taxis.  Always traveling solo allows Rosemary to meet people from all cultures and is frequently invited to be a guest in their homes.  She subscribes to the philosophy: "We travel to find out who we are."

Just For Fun
For those of you who are planning a driving vacation in the near future, here are a few things you may not want to say to the policeman if you get pulled over:
  -- Bad cop! No doughnut!
-- You're not gonna check the trunk, are you?
-- Aren't you that guy from the Village People?
-- Sorry, Officer, I didn't realize my radar detector wasn't plugged in.
-- What do you mean, "Have I been drinking? You're the trained specialist!"
-- Gee, Officer! That's terrific! The last officer only gave me a warning, too!
-- Didn't I see you get your butt kicked on Cops?
-- So, uh, you on the take or what?
-- I can't reach my license unless you hold my beer.
