Countering Increasing Museum Fees
One of the popular activities when traveling to a new country or a new city is often a visit to the local museum.  But over the past few years, entrance fees and special exhibit fees for many museums have been increasing, making it expensive for the whole family to enjoy them.  Museums attribute these increased fees to higher maintenance, security and insurance costs for both their resident collection and for traveling special exhibits, along with decreased government and private support.

A great way to counter these increasing museum fees is with museum memberships.  Most museums offer memberships for a family that are often less expensive than one-time entrance fees.  Memberships sometimes even include any special exhibits, as well.  Another benefit of a membership is that visiting a large museum can be broken up into several visits to avoid trying to see and absorb it all in one day, without any added expense.

If you are planning on visiting several museums in a single city, you should also check into the availability of any kind of city-wide museum pass, such as the "Museum Pass" in Paris.  This single pass, purchased for one reasonable rate, will gain you entrance to many of the museums throughout Paris.

“Travels In West Africa” by Mary Kingsley, 1897, published by National Geographic Books.  Until 1893, Mary Kingsley led a secluded life in Victorian England.  But at age 30, defying every convention of womanhood of the time, she left England to collect African botanical specimens for a book left unfinished by her father at his death.  This is the account of her dauntless travels through western and equatorial Africa, unaccompanied but for African guides, into dangerous jungles, where the tribes were reputed to be ferocious and cannibalistic.  Along the way, she fought off crocodiles with a paddle, hit a leopard over the head with a pot, fell into an animal trap lined with sharpened sticks, and waded through swamps in chin-deep water.  Despite her travails, Kingsley succeeded remarkably in this unknown place, and her story—as an explorer and as a woman—has become an enduring tale of adventure.
