Winter '08 Travel Programs

All travel programs begin at 7:00 P.M. (unless noted otherwise)

Tuesday, November 11th - YUCATAN, MEXICO - Culture.  People.  Food.  Water.  Sun.  Whatever your reasons for visiting Mexico, you will find what you are looking for on the spectacular Yucatan Peninsula.  Anne and Brian Hooker report on a road trip across the Yucatan where they visited numerous small towns, beaches, ruins and archeological sites.  There are inexpensive inns in small, quiet towns and scenic coastal areas.  The presentation will be generously illustrated with Brian's photographs.

Tuesday, November 18th - MONGOLIA - Mongolia's mystiqueis as compelling today as it was in the age of Chinngghis (Genghis) Khan and Marco Polo.  A vast land of steppe, mountains and enormous sky, Mongolia looks much as it did during Khan's great empire, and many of its people are still nomads.  Join Wendy Redal for an adventure into this hospitable country, as we travel by traditional horseback and 4WD van, staying in felt gers and camping among lakes and larch forests.  We'll visit the site of Karakorum, capital of the Mongol empire, 13th century Erdene Zuu monastery, and attend Nadaam Festival with its pageantry of horse racing, wresting and archery.  In far western mongolia, we share a cup of airag -- fermented mare's milk -- with a Kazakh eagle hunter and his family.  Come along for a diverse journey through an ancient land poised on the brink of rapid change.

Tuesday, November 25th - NO SHOW - HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Tuesday, December 2nd - KARAKORAM HIGHWAY - CHINA SILK ROAD - Come travel the highest paved international highway in the world!  The Karakoram Highway also know as the "Friendship Highway" takes you from the Pamir mountains in China through the Karakoram mountains in Pakistan.  We will travel from Kashgar in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Province of China over 16,000 foot Kunjerab pass to Gilgit, Pakistan, passing through the incredible Hunza Valley.  Join traveler and photographer Margie Robinson to view the sights and people who live near the top of the world!

Tuesday, December 9th - SOUTH AFRICA - Join Dick Fetter as he takes us through the magical land of South Africa.  We'll see great white sharks, great red wines and great walks in Kruger National Park during this evening's journey.  We'll explore the spectacular craggy peaks and open plains that teem with exotic wildlife -- think lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras and more!  We'll also learn about apartheid and the racial issues that South Africans face still today.  From its vibrant culture to its stunning panorama views, cosmopolitan cities and vineyard-clad hillsides, it is no wonder that South Africa is such a popular destination.

Tuesday, January 20th - NICARAGUA: LAND OF LAKES & VOLCANOES - Take a tour of Central America's largest, least-visited nation with best-selling author Joshua Berman, who has been traveling, living, working, and volunteering in Nicaragua since he first went there as a Peace Corps Volunteer in 1998.  Joshua (known as "don Josue" in Nicaragua), plays guitar and sings Nicaraguan folk music as part of this photo tour of the "land of lakes and volcanoes".  Please join us not only to enjoy the sights and sounds of Nicaragua, but to learn more about the country and people of Nicaragua!
