Travel Tip of the Month

(Adapted from the N.Y. Times travel Section)

Eating out is part of the fun of travelling and it gives you an authentic glimpse at the local customs and culture. The tricky part is joining in on local customs correctly! There are a few things to research before you go.

  • For the foodies out there – investigate dishes (and drinks!) your destination is known for so you don’t miss out. How else will you learn the dish to eat in Finland on a Thursday is Hernekeitto (pea soup) or make it your mission to eat rabbit cooked in white wine and garlic in Malta? Asking locals about their own favorites is another great way to go.
  • Find out what times meals are usually eaten. It can vary quite a bit across the globe. If you have a packed schedule and keep missing the restaurants’ hours – you’re going to wind up eating a lot of snack food! Additionally, going during peak hours (which can be as late as 9:00 or 10:00pm in Spain!) will allow for people watching, a great way to soak in local culture.
  • Check your guidebook for an idea of tipping customs – in some parts of the world, it is downright rude to tip.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for your check. In many parts of the world, bringing your check to the table is a sign of rushing you, and when meals are about connecting with friends and family, no one should be hurried!
