December 8th – China Less Travelled: Presented by Richard Lion
Most China tours concentrate on the big four: Beijing, Xian (for the terracotta warriors), Shanghai and the Yangtze River's “Three Gorges” cruise. Yet, there are a host of other sights, many of them under UNESCO World Heritage protection, that are off this beaten path. These include a nearly intact Ming Era city, a Buddha as tall as a mountain, a hanging monastery, a panda sanctuary, a 2,500-year old city sometimes called “The Venice of the East” to name few. No tour encompassed these; so independent (and budget) travel was necessary – a formidable undertaking if you cannot speak or read the language. Richard will recount how this adventure played out and take you to these less seen places.

The famous plaza where the tree is located each year was opened in 1933 and is a complex consisting of 19 buildings and was commissioned by a famous American philanthropist and financer from a well-known wealthy family.
