Travel Tips
Always carry your own toilet paper or tissues, even when traveling in “civilized”
places. Americans often take it for granted that there will always be toilet paper in the bathroom, and it’s
simply not true, even in Europe. Those nice pocket-size tissue packs come in very handy...
Ask the Experts Can you provide some suggestions for avoiding stomach trouble while traveling in
less developed countries?
That’s a good question. Nobody likes to be sick while they’re traveling.
Staying hydrated is important. Drink only bottled water (make sure you break the seal on the cap yourself).
Hot drinks like tea and coffee are generally safe if the water has been boiled. It’s a good idea to brush your
teeth with bottled water too. Always wash your hands with soap before eating. If you’re not near water, try
antibacterial hand sanitizer, baby wipes, or moist towelettes. Eat only fruit that can be peeled. Most
anything cooked is ok to eat. Stay away from really greasy foods. Some people swear they never get sick if
they stick to a vegetarian diet. Try eating a yogurt every day. Most important, use common sense.

Just For Fun
A Russian and an American are talking: When I’m in a good mood I drive a car
painted a light color, says the American. When I’m busy or have a lot of troubles, I drive a darker colored car.
When I go for vacation overseas, I pick a brightly colored car. Things are much easier in Russia, says the Russian.
If you are in a good mood, they will give you a ride in a yellow car with a blue stripe (police car). If you
feel bad, the car will be white and the stripe red (ambulance). I was abroad only once, and there I drove a tank.
Beware Surcharge on Overseas Credit Card Transactions
Visa and MasterCard have long tacked on a 1% fee on foreign purchases. Now, many
of the banks that issue the cards have been adding separate fees of their own. Earlier this month, First USA added
a 2% surcharge to all overseas transactions for cards that didn’t already have one. That means users of its popular
Visa cards will pay an additional 3% on all foreign charges. Because of the strong dollar, overseas travel is still
a bargain, but if you like to use plastic, it’s not as good a deal as it used to be. In many cases, the credit-card
fees don’t show up separately on travelers’ monthly statements. Instead, the surcharges are folded into the cost of
each item charged. Read the small print on your credit-card statements to find out the surcharge policy on your
cards. - from The Wall Street Journal
Discount Airfares
With the summer travel season quickly approaching, it’s not too late to find last-minute
airfare bargains. Try the online discount travel websites www.travelocity.com,
www.expedia.com, www.orbitz.com,
www.priceline.com. These websites enable you to search for
the lowest airfares based on specific travel dates, or if your dates are flexible, they can find you the cheapest dates to
travel. These fares are often cheaper than going directly through the airlines. Most of the airlines offer
“Internet deals” if you buy tickets online through their official websites.
