More Airport Security Screening News
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is still fine-tuning their
security procedures in an effort to streamline and speed up airport security screenings. They have recently begun
requiring all passengers to remove their shoes and send them through the carry-on scanning machines. Previously,
only randomly selected people had to remove their shoes.
Why the change? The sensitivity of the walk-through metal detectors was recently tuned up at many airports.
This caused many more passengers’ footwear to set off the alarm, consequently, the lines slowed down because passengers
then had to remove their shoes and get re-screened. Lines should move quicker with everyone removing their shoes,
so travelers may now want to remember to wear socks.
Healthy Travel: Maintaining Blood Flow
After all of the preparation for a trip, it is often a relief to sit on the plane and
start relaxing and actually enjoying your journey. Keep one more thing in mind… your health. Staying healthy
will allow you to make the most of your adventure.
The prolonged inactivity of a long plane flight (or car, train, or bus ride) will often cause some discomfort, but it can
also negatively affect your health. This is due to the reduction, or stoppage, of the blood flow into your legs while
in the sitting position for long periods of time. A reduction of blood flow can cause swelling of the legs and feet,
discomfort, and possibly some mild pain. If the blood flow is cut off for a time, a blood clot may form. The
blood clot could then travel to other parts of your body, potentially creating other further health risks.
The good news is that there is no need to avoid long journeys. It is quite easy to eliminate any health risks due to
prolonged inactivity by maintaining the blood flow into your extremities. Doctors recommend several things.
Stay hydrated. It helps to “thin” the blood and enhance blood flow. Water is best, but juice is okay.
Avoid alcohol and caffeine drinks. Get up and move around every 30 minutes or so when on a plane (every two hours
or so on ground transportation), allowing the blood to easily circulate throughout your body. Lastly, even while sitting,
flex and stretch your muscles on a regular basis. Muscle activity and extending limbs will stimulate and assist
your blood flow.
