Thanks to all of you for ten wonderful and exciting years!!  After all, travel keeps us young and tolerant!

Phoning Home While Traveling Abroad
It is always nice to keep in touch with family and friends back home while you are traveling abroad.  Keeping in touch has become easier with the appearance of the many Internet cafes in even the unlikeliest of locations in the past several years.  But sometimes, sending an email is just not enough; you want (or need) to talk with someone.  Making a telephone call back to the U.S. from another country can be quite easy with only a little pre-trip planning.

Here’s a suggestion for a cheap and hassle-free alternative for international calling.  Prior to departing on your trip, you will need to obtain a calling card from a phone company that provides international service, such as AT&T, MCI or Sprint.  You will also need to bring that company’s direct access phone number for the country from which you will be making the call.  If you are traveling through more than one country, there will be a unique direct access number for each country.  Direct access numbers can be easily obtained either by calling the phone company or checking their website.

Then, to make a telephone call back to the U.S. from a foreign country:
  1) Dial your carrier’s direct access number for the country in which you are traveling.
This connects you to your carrier’s phone network.
  2) When prompted, enter your calling card number (and PIN, if required).
  3) After tone or prompt, enter area code and number that you want to call.
  4) Your call will be connected and the cost will be added to a monthly bill sent to your home.

Suggested Reading
“The Road of Dreams” by Bruce B. Junek, 1991, published by Images Of The World.  A wild food fight at an Akha hilltribe wedding, a week-long search through swamps and bogs for the elusive and nocturnal kiwi, and a 10-day vow of silence in a Buddhist monastery.  These are only a few of the adventures chronicled in this book, the story of Bruce Junek and Tass Thacker’s 26-month around-the-world bicycle trip.  They crossed four continents through sweltering temperatures and winter snowstorms on not just a cycling journey, but in pursuit of their dreams.
Just For Fun
The following are some English-language signs observed in foreign countries:
  - In an Athens hotel: "Visitors are expected to complain at the office daily between the hours of 9 and 11 AM."
  - In an East African paper: "A new swimming pool is rapidly taking shape since the contractors have thrown in the bulk of their workers."
  - In a Hong Kong supermarket: "For your convenience, we recommend courageous, efficient self-service."
  - In a Bangkok dry cleaner’s: "Drop your trousers here for best results."

"One sure sign of travelers is their relationship to maps. I love to look at a map,
even if it is a map of Mars, and figure out where I am going and how I am going
to get there, what route I will take.  I imagine what adventures might await me
even though I know that the journey is never what we plan for;
it’s what happens between the lines.”
