Traveler’s Resolutions For The New Year
Several recently completed surveys indicate that travelers are increasingly
experiencing rudeness and a lack of common courtesy during their travels. Since January often brings with it New Year’s
resolutions, we thought we would share four traveler’s resolutions that we can all begin to practice to keep the travel
experience for everyone as enjoyable and exciting as it has always been. These resolutions will not only help improve
your travels, but at the same time improve our encounters and the impression we leave with the people we meet in other
countries along the way.
1) Resolve to pack lighter & smarter – Taking less will ease your stress. Getting from place to place and through
airport lines will be easier on you (and your back) with lighter bags.
2) Resolve to be a better citizen of the world – Keep up with international news, especially about the countries you are
planning to visit. You’ll become a more knowledgeable traveler and better able to discuss current events. As the
world becomes smaller, what happens in the rest of the world affects everyone.
3) Resolve to be a more courteous and tolerant traveler – Delays and lines encountered when traveling can be stressful
and frustrating. Venting that stress and frustration won’t improve the situation, while a little tolerance and common
courtesy might, and will certainly make it more bearable for everyone.
4) Resolve to be a better “ambassador” for the U.S. – Personal encounters with the people we meet while traveling abroad
leave them with a strong and lasting impression of the U.S. and its people. A friendly and respectful interaction with
someone can often counter a bad impression falsely created from hearsay and/or local propaganda.

“Airline” Television Series
If you are in between travels and want to learn a little more about the airline
industry, watch for a new television series beginning on Monday evenings this month on the A&E cable television network called
“AIRLINE”. This fast-paced, reallife series will examine the day-to-day operations of Southwest Airlines.
Episodes will go behind the scenes with airline pilots, flight attendants, crew, check-in staff, and airport employees to show
how an airline actually operates. Other episodes will showcase the ups and downs of passengers who board Southwest Airlines’
flights in Los Angeles and Chicago.
New Solution For Locking Luggage!
The problem of locking checked airline baggage has been resolved through an unusual
collaboration between the U.S. government and lock manufacturers. A new line of luggage locks has been specially designed
for airline travelers, which can be opened by baggage screeners working for the Transportation Security Agency (TSA).
These Travel Sentry certified locks come in both keyed and 4-dial
combination styles. You can lock your baggage again and know that your belongings are secure, while TSA inspectors can open
your luggage if needed without cutting the lock or damaging your bag. Stop by Changes In Latitude Travel Store or visit our
website to purchase these new locks.

Suggested Reading “The Best American Travel Writing 2003” edited by Ian Frazier & Jason Wilson, 2003, published by Houghton Mifflin.
This is the fourth and latest volume in a series of collections of wonderful travel writing by American authors. These
nonfiction essays go beyond the latest luxury hotel or hot spot to cover unorthodox travel topics. They range from the
humorous to the tragic and everywhere in between, with a “loose” theme of the inherent environmental aspect of travel. If
you can’t sit down with a complete travelogue, the books in this series provide shorter bites to keep your travel bug at bay.
Just For Fun
Some pilot announcements heard recently on various airlines:
-- “Welcome aboard! Our airline is pleased to have some of the best flight attendants
in the industry. Unfortunately, none of them are on this flight…”
-- “We’ve reached our cruising altitude now, and I’m turning off the seat belt sign.
I’m also switching to autopilot, so that I can come back there and visit with all of
you for the rest of the flight.”
-- “Weather at our destination is 50 degrees with some broken clouds, but they will
try to have them fixed before we arrive.”
-- “We have reached our cruising altitude, so I am switching off the seat belt sign. Feel
free to move about as you wish, but please stay inside the plane. It’s a bit cold outside,
and if you walk on the wings it affects the flight pattern.”
