Discount Airlines Increase Competition
Competition in the airline industry is continually increasing.  The number of discount airlines increases by another one this month.  Ted Airlines will begin service in mid-February from their Denver hub to Reno, Las Vegas, Phoenix, New Orleans, Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando and Ontario, California.  Atlantic Coast Air recently changed its name to Independence Air and later this spring will expand to 50 cities including coast-to-coast flights.  Many of the other discount airlines also have plans to continue to expand into new markets.

The discount airlines not only compete with the major airlines by offering lower fares, but with most of them flying newer planes, discount airlines also offer more cabin comforts, as well.  Multi-channel entertainment systems, satellite TVs and leather seats are just a few of the standards that some of the discount airlines are providing to even their coach passengers.

The winner from all of this competition is you, the traveler.  More competition along flight routes means more options, lower prices for airline tickets and better service.  If you haven’t had the chance to fly on one of the discount airlines recently, check into which of them you might be able to use for an upcoming trip.  You’ll probably be able to save some money and have a more comfortable flight!

“Dead Reckoning” edited by Helen Whybrow, 2002, published by W. W. Norton & Company.  This is a fascinating collection of stories from the nineteenth century’s most legendary journeys of exploration and discovery – from the search for the source of the Nile River to the first crossing of the Himalayas.  Each one of these 32 captivating narratives (grouped by theme into three sections) packs a big emotional punch, whether it's a tale of starvation and injury or an awestruck description of natural wonders.
Just For Fun
Some airline arrival announcements heard recently on various airlines:
-- “Thanks for flying with us.  We hope you enjoyed giving us the business
as much as we enjoyed taking you for a ride."
-- “We’d like to thank you for flying with us today.  And the next time you get
the insane urge to go blasting through the skies in a pressurized metal tube,
we hope you will think of us.”
-- “Last one off the plane has to clean it!”
-- “As you exit the plane, please make sure you gather all of your belongings.
Anything left behind will be distributed evenly among the flight attendants.
Please do not leave children or spouses.”
