Photo ID For Children?
One of our readers recently commented that she was asked for a photo ID for her
child when obtaining boarding passes for a domestic U.S. flight, and asked us if we knew of any new regulations requiring
photo ID’s for children. We re-checked. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), passengers
age 18 and over must present official identification with their airline ticket. Children under the age of 18 are not
currently required to provide a photo ID for domestic travel. For international travel, however, everyone, no matter
what his or her age, is required to present a valid passport.
With that being said, airports around the country often seem to vary how they carry out TSA regulations. Also, airline
and security personnel could question your child being 18 or not if they are with in a few years of that age. Having to
prove your child is under 18 and does not require a photo ID would only be both a delay and an inconvenience.
So, it might be a good idea for you to have some sort of photo ID for your child and not need it. Prepare ahead of time
and get a passport for your child. Passports for children under 16 years old are valid for 5 years. Who knows?
You may have the opportunity to travel overseas with them in the near future and you will be ready. As an alternative,
most Department of Motor Vehicles will issue you an official state photo ID at a comparable cost.
