News For United Airlines Travelers
United Airlines is making another big change to help with their cost-cutting efforts that our fellow travelers should be aware of, especially if you fly with them frequently.  United is replacing the large Boeing planes on many of its routes with smaller, 50-70 seat, United Express jets.  The smaller jets use less fuel and cost less to operate overall.  But, that also means these flights will be filled quicker and have fewer seats available for frequent flyer redemption use.  The smaller jets also offer less headroom, less legroom and less carry-on space than the bigger planes.  So, plan ahead, book early, check into the type of aircraft you’ll be on when you purchase your tickets and pack light.
Product Spotlight: Travel Organizers
Between itineraries, e-ticket confirmations, passports, hotel reservation information, boarding passes, and any other documents, currency and IDs, it is sometimes difficulty to keep all our travel documents organized.  The answer is a convenient travel organizer.  They come in two basic styles: an airport neck pouch that keeps your ID and travel documents handy, but secure, for the many airport check points you have to pass through, and a more complete document organizer that stores and organizes everything from credit card receipts to those souvenir coins.  Try one out and see how nice it is to find what you are looking for quickly and easily.
Pre-Travel Checklist
You know that feeling you get, when the plane is just leaving the runway and you start wondering whether or not you locked the back door.  It can drive you crazy, and can make it harder to really enjoy your travels.  This month, we start a pre-travel checklist to help everyone prepare for your departure.  Going through it before heading off to the airport will help you preserve your sanity and really enjoy your trip.

-- Stop delivery of both mail and newspaper, or arrange for a trusted friend/neighbor to collect it on a daily basis.  A pile of newspapers on the front sidewalk is a sure sign no one is home.
-- Walk through the house and make sure all windows and doors are locked.
-- Don’t leave your spare key hidden anywhere outside your house.  Instead, leave it with a nearby friend or neighbor where it will be accessible, if needed.
-- Empty all trashcans and recycling bins.  Returning home to either insects that have found some free food or nasty odors is never very welcoming.
-- Turn off the gas to any gas appliances, including water heater.  The pilot lights will go out, but this will prevent the possibility of any leaks and explosions while you are away.
-- Turn off the water to appliances such as the dishwasher and clothes washer.  Water pressure surges can burst a weak hose while you are gone.

We’ll continue to build our Pre-Travel Checklist in upcoming newsletters.  If you have suggestions that will contribute to our list, feel free to e-mail them to us at adventure@cil.com.

Tuesday, October 12th (7:30pm) - Bicycle Expedition Across Africa & Ascent of Mt. Kilimanjaro
In March 2004, a group from Boulder dipped their back wheels into the Atlantic Ocean off the shores of Capetown, South Africa.  Nearly two months and 3000 miles later, they dipped their front wheels into the Indian Ocean near Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.  They rode through the remote regions of South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Tanzania.  Then they climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro!  Join us as Stan Havlick shares his tales and slides of this extraordinary adventure.  A $5 DONATION will be collected at this show for the Colorado Cancer Foundation.  Please join us!

Suggested Reading
“Under The Tuscan Sun: At Home In Italy” by Frances Mayes, 1996, published by Bantam Doubleday.  Gourmet and poet, Frances Mayes, chronicles her experiences of buying, restoring and living in an abandoned villa in the Tuscan countryside.  She shares and invites her readers to explore the pleasures of Italian life, cuisine, and culture.  She brings the lyrical voice of a poet to the details of her long summer days working in the garden, her excursions into the nearby towns and markets, and her joyful interactions with the local people.  Enjoy this book, it lasts much longer than the movie and is so much more delicious.
Just For Fun
A man in Paris nearly got away with stealing several paintings from the Louvre recently.  However, after carefully planning the crime, and getting in and out of the museum past security, he was captured only a few blocks away when his Econoline van ran out of gas.
When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such a mistake, he replied:  “I had no Monet to buy Degas to make the Van Gogh.”
