Precautions Against Airline Bankruptcies
Several airlines are currently operating under bankruptcy protection and with increasing fuel costs, times are not going to get any easier for them in the near future.  How does that affect you, the individual traveler?  In general, it shouldn’t.  These airlines are operating normally and most likely will not discontinue their service.  However, there are some precautions you can take to better protect yourself and your vacation.

** Plan this year’s travel a little earlier so that you can make use of any accumulated, but unused, frequent flyer mileage.  If an airline does go out of business, frequent flyer mileage will most likely be lost.
** Purchase your airline tickets using a credit card.  If your airline goes out of business prior to your trip, you can submit a claim with your credit card company, which should re-imburse you for your ticket cost.
** If you have purchased trip cancellation insurance (or are thinking of it) to cover the possiblity of your airline going out of business, verify with your insurer that your policy covers bankruptcies.  Many insurers do not cover an airline going out of business as part of their trip cancellation insurance.
** Consider flying on other airlines besides those operating under bankruptcy.  “Partner” airlines still gain you frequent flyer mileage, but may have a much lower risk of going out of business.

Traveler’s Spanish Language Class
Our Traveler’s Italian class is full, but there are still a few seats left in our Traveler’s Spanish class starting Monday, April 11th.  It will run for six Mondays from 7:00 to 8:30.  Learn what you need to know for travel, with a small group of fellow travelers.  The cost is just $79.95 (plus handouts) and class size is limited, so stop by our store or call us at (303) 786-8406 for more details and to reserve your place.
TSA Security Update
The Transportation Security Agency (TSA) has added to their list of items prohibited on aircraft.  Starting April 14th, you will not be allowed to carry any lighters onto aircraft, either in carry-on bags or on your person.  The new rule applies to lighters of all types and any found at security checkpoints will be confiscated.  So, if you usually carry an expensive lighter with you, leave it at home for safekeeping.

Suggested Reading
"Calcutta"  by Simon Winchester & Rupert Winchester, 2004, published by Lonely Planet.  Calcutta is a city in a state of permanent surprise, which never ceases to shock those who pass through.  It’s also a city that delights and enthralls those who are stalwart enough to stay and brave enough to make an effort to look, and to see.  This book consists of three parts, the first is a brief history of Calcutta to give the reader some historical perspective.  In the other two, Simon and his son reflect on their experiences, preconceptions and individual fascination with Calcutta after living there for several years.  Extracts from journal entries, poems, novels, and travel narratives penned by other visitors to this intense city are included throughout.
Just For Fun
A travel agent received a call from a gentleman who had questions about the documents that he needed to fly to China.  After a lengthy discussion about passports, he was reminded that he also needed a visa.  “Oh no I don’t.  I’ve been to China before and never needed one.”  After verifying that his stay required a visa, the travel agent again told him that a visa was required.  Exasperated, he said, “Look, I’ve been to China four times and each time they have accepted my American Express!”
