Take The Bite Out Of Travel

Whether you are traveling during summer months or to warm climates in the winter months, it’s important not to forget the insect repellant!  Many diseases such as West Nile, malaria, and lyme disease are contracted through insect bites.  All it takes is a quick spray or rub with some insect repellant to help you avoid annoying insects and keep you healthy, so you can enjoy your trip even more.

There are a variety insect repellants available to protect you from those pesky insects.  Liquids, creams, and lotions (with DEET and without) are packaged in tubes, sprays, roll-ons and bottles for direct skin application.  No type is necessarily better than the others.  Spray and roll-on applicators don’t require you to get the insect repellant on your hands during application, like a cream or lotion.  Get the type and dispenser that you will find convenient to take with you and use.  Consider your destination and activities to determine the amount and strength to purchase.  If you are traveling mostly to cities, a small amount of lower strength will protect you during early evening outings.  If you are headed to the tropics with lots of outdoor activities planned, bring a larger amount with higher strength for better protection.

There are some precautions to remember when using insect repellant.  Apply it only to exposed skin, avoiding cuts or irritated skin.  To avoid ingesting/inhaling it, don’t use a spray applicator in an enclosed area or around any food.  Wash your hands after application to avoid rubbing it in your eyes or contacting it with your food.  For the same reasons, don’t apply it to children’s hands.

Some newer options for repelling insects have appeared over the last several years that allow you to avoid applying repellant directly on your skin.  Insect repellant sprays (containing Permethrin) are made for spraying on your clothing instead of your skin.  There is also clothing being manufactured, such as the BUZZ-OFF® line, that already has the insect repellant bonded to the fabric for even more convenience.

Just For Fun

Swiss mountain guides can get tired of answering the same questions over and over.  This time a tourist was asked the guide one too many silly questions.  They were hiking through a mountain valley that was strewn with large rocks and the traveler asked, “How did these rocks get here?”
“Sir,” the guide replied, “they were brought down by a glacier.”
The tourist looked up and down the valley and adjacent mountains and said, “But I don’t see any glacier.”
Exasperated, the guide said, “I guess it has gone back for more rocks.”
