Travel Tip of the Month!
THE LANGUAGE BARRIER
The following tips are from the New York Times article written by Shivani Vora, who focuses on using the tips of world traveler Francois Thibault, a French adventure who has navigated the world of foreign language when traveling to a destination where he does not speak the mother tongue.
Tip 1: Make use of foreign language apps.
-Google translate is the most popular app language application of time and has been known to be one of the best. Thibault makes note to find the right app according the language you are translating. If you find the language uses characters, perhaps there is a more appropriate application to utilize. – it is also important to note that, like the English language, deciphering a word via a dictionary may only be helpful to distinguish the general meaning of the word and less so to help in conversation.
Tip 2: Hand + Body Gestures.
-As if you can’t vocalize anything at all, hand gestures such as pointing or a simple head nod can allow you to communicate general wants and needs. Though, it is important to research the dos and don’ts of certain gestures culturally prior to your adventure to be sure you are not being offensive to anyone.
Tip 3: Learn a few key words.
-Alike to the hand and body gestures mentioned previously, learning a handful of key words of the native language will take you father than you know. Its possible you will gain more respect and locals will be more patient to work with you by showing interest and care in learning their language. Thibault suggests using YouTube or a similar source to hear the pronunciation of said key words.
Tip 4: Engage with a local travel agent.
-Say trouble arises due to a miscommunication between you and the native language spoken by the locals, a travel agent is one of the best resources to aid in correct translation and to assure that both parties are not being offended.
Tip 5: Hire a local tour guide.
-similar to the aid of a travel agent, a local tour guide is an excellent source to help with translation and simple communication. By hearing the guide engage with the locals will also train your ears to better grasp the native language. Thibault suggests hiring the local guide within one the first days of being at your destination so you have a head start. Being able to find a local guide should be easy, especially if you are able to work with a concierge of some sort from where you are staying.
