One of the absolute coolest stores in the Denver/Boulder area, Changes In
Latitude is a traveler's dream. Owned by Cindy Sonderup, the store offers one-stop travel shopping like
you've never seen in these parts.
Interested in camel-trekking through India or volcano-climbing in central Mexico? Not a problem. A
multisport adventure in the Canadian Rockies? You bet. Trips such as these are standard fare for many
of Sonderup's customers. What's more, you can get all of your gear, clothing and accessories -- including
maps and guidebooks -- without ever leaving the place.
Retail items included luggage, books, videotapes, maps, homeopathic jet lag tablets and other flight aids,
clothing, containers for personal hygiene items, travel adapters, clothing steamers, hair dryers, currency
converters and more. Even if you're heading to Colorado's high country or some other domestic location,
the store can help.
But Changes In Latitude is more than just a retail outlet. The place hosts free weekly seminars on topics
such as travel medicine, packing light, and how to arrange a home exchange. Also, guest speakers lead
discussions on anything from the highlights of southern Africa to ancient Incan civilization. Language
courses are available, from French to Nepalese.
Another specialty of the house is Sonderup's personalized travel consultations. For $45 per hour, she'll
work with clients to research, plan, organize and -- eventually -- take their dream trip. Travelers wanting
to make rare and obscure journeys often don't know where to start and how to plan for, say, a trip that includes
canoeing in Zimbabwe and bungee-jumping in New Zealand.
How did Sonderup get started? Some years back, she was in Costa Rica and met a couple who had sold everything
they owned to travel around the world. Inspired to do the same, she spent a year and a half globe-trotting,
traveling from continent to continent. After returning home, she wanted to own a business that catered to the
needs of other travelers. Six years (and countless trips) later, business is great -- so much so that plans
to open a Denver store are in the works.
Shopping With Kyle is a monthly feature highlighting offbeat adventures
for both shop-til-you-drop types and those who can only be dragged kicking and screaming into a store.
